I need a bigger brain!

we met last night with our friend who has the cheese making stall inside the market last night , she is also my partner for the cupcakes there.

She has MS , previously it was managed well, but over the last six months is causing her some problems with her balance, and fatigue. She is also noticing she is losing interest in the stall and found the pace even over the winter was very challenging .

In the spring and summer, the pace is easily, 10 times what you would face in jan, feb.

She doesn't want to lose her spot, and in part is hoping a break will end this round of worsening symptoms . So she has asked us to take over her stall from now till, nov. through the busy season.

It sounds exciting and awesome, but realistically we are talking about adding two more full market days to an already maxed farm, and farm staff.

It would give is an opportunity to branch out our product lines, showcase the cakes more, higher end crafts and floral arrangements, hand made candies with fancier packaging, etc. cheeses, cream cheeses etc. ice cooling display units etc there .

It will mean significantly more work though, mostly for my end of things. We would need to find more part time workers, and schedule additional truck and trailer for loading.

Economically it is a sound decision, emotionally we want to help them-we know they are not mortgage free yet, close though, so we could takeover the rent, then kick them back 20% of profits so they would still have some additional income coming in.

I just feel stretched a bit thin, I figured we would take over down the road for them but I figured we would have the kids older, and be in a better place in our life to do so.

On the other hand, we are developing some goals around here in addition to the land purchase this fall, down the road we would like a hydroponic greenhouse that would filter through our tilapia ponds. We would like to replace our trucks with electric vehicles, and our first priority would be banking a years wages for at least one permanent year round farm hand.

I love the idea of showcasing the cakes etc, more. They are excellent profit ratio, are not weather dependant. And have less risk then being solely dependent on crops alone for the farm income.

It's a lot to weigh out and think about, I know we will end up doing it, partly out of friendship, partly because it is a good opportunity it's but I just need a bigger brain some days to plan out all the logistics of it. ,

Could this be an opportunity for another family to join in? Can you have a girl (sister to a farmhand?) live with you this summer and pitch in with kids/cakes/chores etc?

It sounds exciting, but I think it important to take on more help with each responsibility so you don't burn out physically and emotionally.

I was thinking.......you don't need a bigger brain, you need to sprout some more arms! LOL

Good luck! You are Matt will make it work and hopefully the break will allow your friend to heal some.

Your opportunities just keep flowing in, don't they?

I would seek out more help for that area of work and just do it.. I know that you can :)

this is why I love it here! I was weighing out all the hiring for the market ends etc. but a mothers helper type person may be exactly what I need. ESP when I am trying to do the cakes etc.

Would be excellent for Amy who is missing astrid so much, give her someone to gout riding, and just has the couple hours for her to root in her sandbox and play on the swings.

Whole new avenue for Matt and into pray on. Really exciting new idea for me.

Reddoor, you epitomize these 2 verses to me:

Luke 16:10 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.NIV

1 Chron 4:9-10 Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, "I gave birth to him in pain." 10 Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request.NIV

You have been faithful in small things and now God is blessing you and enlarging your territory!

The first thing you learn in management studies is that you as an employee can only accomplish X amount of work. You as a manager can accomplish X times #employees. It really is time for you to think of yourself as the manager of your company, training others to do anything that you can delegate. In doing so you expand your impact on all those around you, providing jobs, teaching skills, modeling how to run a business, etc.

thank you plinda , i deeply appreciate that, choked both matt and i up

.

I was able to talk to matt tonight for a couple hours, and we feel we have a solid plan in place, we will be taking on one more full time farm hand (not fair to make our boys take on additional work) and we will hire on a helper for me with the children, and also hire on two part time girls to work 20 hour weekly on floral arrangements, flowers, and packaging up baking etc here at the farm. then hire back out to the ladies i used last year for more contract baking.

I need to find someone to learn the cake techniques other then just using Astrid or Clare when they have free time. I have someone in mind after praying about it, it feels solid to me. I am going to drive over and speak with her tommorow. She is new to the district, young and all but we have had a few good chats and she is very artistic in doing up things for her sunday classes, so she might enjoy the creatvity side to it all. She lives with her sister and her famly, but I don't know why or what not behind the move. But she has approached me to ask about general baking for me to earn some of her own money. Being beholden to family could become trying on a person at times i would guess, she seems spunky . Might work out well for both of us if she is willing.

matt had the exact same two names as i did to help with the children, so we will ask our first choice tommorow morning- how did she become our first choice, we pulled out of matt's hat! Honestly both are wonderful choices.

You are such a blessing to your community and others. I hope that if my MS starts affecting my life like your friends has, I'll have someone as competent, loving and helpful as you to lean on.
