Today has been a BIG day at our house :)

First off today is my littlest little girls first birthday :D It is so bittersweet. She is my last baby and she is growing up so fast! She will be walking any day now!

Also today was my son's first dentist appointment. It was so hard. His behavioral therapist came this morning to help me get him ready and out the door. Of course even with her here he self harmed himself to the point of giving himself a massive bruised goose egg on the back of his head and fresh scratches on his neck. Good news is that he doesn't have any cavities and didn't physically hurt anyone while we were there. Having to pin him down in the middle of the waiting room while he was screaming and self harming wasn't so great. It is hard when a room full of strangers are looking and judging your child and your parenting without knowing the full situation. I just wanted to scream "He is autistic and in a new place, with new people looking at him, talking to him and touching him. Give us both a break and turn away!" Please please PLEASE if you see a child having a meltdown in public take a second before you start judging the parent or child and consider that the child may not be in control of themselves at that second and that the parent is doing their best to keep the child and YOU safe. I managed to get him and his stuff out to the car in the 4inches of snow alone while he was screaming and flailing. My arms were so weak by the time I got him to the car I seriously didn't know if I could physically man handle him into his car seat restraints. He is getting so big and so strong. I honestly am scared that I won't be able to safely man handle him much longer. One of us is going to get hurt :(

We are now totally snowed in with about 10inches of snow out there and it is still coming down. My husband got the night off because of the snow so that is great :) My son's Occupational therapist has already cancelled for tomorrow and I am assuming his behavioral therapist will as well. We are tucked in to our warm home and not going anywhere till it thaws out a bit out there :)

You made it through the day & the outing-big hugs & high fives! You did it!!

A question--is there a school that he will go to when he is older, for kids with his disabilities & more? I have 2 friends who work at a school that is ~45 min from here. Kids with the "more severe disabilities", if you will, go there--some live there, others stay for the week & go home on weekends, others are day students. Just wondering if that was something that depended on the area you lived in. Hugs--you have a hard road ahead, but you are a good mom & will make the right choices to help him grow into the person God intends for him to be!

Yes he will go to a special autistic school starting in April when he turns 3. It is about a  45 min drive. Unfortunately we can't move closer to the school to cut the commute because the school district here is the one paying the tuition, so we have to stay in district. He will be in an all day preschool, that is hard for me since he will only be 3. However I have talked to several people who have had to institutionalize their children when they get to teenage years because they are too aggressive to care for at home. We are hoping that by starting the therapies and schools so young we can keep him home with us until he is 18 and ready to go out into the world as an adult.  He is so very very smart that he could have a very bright future, we just have to get through all the behavior issues so that he has a chance to excel.

I know you'll do your best for your son, and he will grow to be as independant as he can be.  Some of your stories make me lol at how smart he is!

He is seriously brilliant when it comes to tools and mechanical things. It is amazing to watch.

I have a friend with an autistic 5 yr old. I realize all kids/situations are different, but she has an ipad for him that she hands him in waiting rooms/church/grocery shopping, etc. that calms him down instantly and he will calmly play his games. It also helps him tune out the "new" environment so it doesn't set him off. They don't use it at all at home, only when going out somewhere, so the "magic doesn't wear off" lol. Just thought I'd mention it in case you haven't tried something like this.

I had that idea as well :) He threw it at me and barely missed giving me a black eye ;) We were going to try head phones and an mp3 player but I got busy and forgot to get one in place before the dr's and dentist appointments these next two weeks. He has 2 more appointments in the next few days. One tomorrow and one next Thursday. I might be able to get something together by next week. Although honestly next week is the developmental ped/neurologist and I would LIKE for him to be at 100% ornery level for that. I want her to see exactly what we are going through and dealing with in all it's glory.
