Once A Month Shopping ~The Research~

As a mother of 5 children 7yrs and under I am a little busy! I know that many people find that they can save the most money on their grocery budget by shopping the sales and then meal planning around what is on sale. I have tried this the last few months and it just isn't working for me. I just don't have the time each week to sit down with the sales flyers and try and figure out a menu based on what is being offered. Add to it when there is a good sale at one store but you have to buy the rest

One A Month Check In In Seems

Well I was going to try and check in more than once a month but thus far it doesn't seem that I've done that very well. Let's see in the last month, I have really tried to stick to my budget although the lovely thing I call a car seems to be soaking me for every dime I scrounge up.   Let's see, thus far...   Had to replace the motor to the windshield wiper sprayer. Then had a gas tank leak, then broke one of my side view mirrors and now the engine won't turn over. So far $700 and countin

The "look"...

SO I got "the look" last week. You know the one....or maybe you don't. The one that says.... You don't get You-tube?!?! Why on earth not???   Now this person is somewhere between acquaintance and friend. Has been told that our house will pay off next month. Knows our goals. And yet, was shocked, totally shocked, that we actually practice what we preach. I just don't think she can wrap her head around not having everything that she wants. Of course, she wants to retire, and can't... bec

Happy Holidays!

Can you believe the holidays are rolling around again? It's amazing how quickly they seem to move through. I guess that's a sure sign that I'm "all grown up" now. *laugh*   Things are going well with the finances right now. The car was paid off with my last entry and since then I've held the title in my hot little hands. I was very pleased to add it to my collection! Now, we're skating through the holiday season. We do have a few "extra" events coming up that will result in some money s

Upcoming Goals

I've realized that my goals can change over time so I am checking in and updating.   1. We want to fill the Roths and SEP-IRA for 2011, and need to get it in before april 15,2012   2. I promised my DH he could have a certain percentage of his home business income to reinvest in the business. Unfortunately, that income has dried up so we have to take that from our budget, meaning our snowball.   3. Building FFEF 1 month at a time with 1 week at a time until our home maintenance fund is fu

Goal For The Next 6 Months 11-3-11

Things have changed up a bit in the last few months. The heating oil tank was becoming unstable (it's behind a retaining wall that's falling down) and it's about 50 years old. So since we really wanted to have an energy efficient we got a ground source heat pump furnace/ac and insulated the house. That said here is where we currently stand:   Sallie Mae - $1.8K HEL - $24.4K Dept of Ed - $70.8K I'm sure there are lots of wet noodles out there about this step backwards, but here is our pla

Finally!

I bit the bullet today.   I got a reimbursement check and threw the entire thing at the car loan. You know, the car loan that I got a year ago after swearing that I'd never do that ever again? I do take pride in the fact that I can pay off a car in a year (but I still swear I'll never do that ever again!).   So, the car is completely paid off! I am just THAT much closer to being completely back into BS3 again.   I've moved up my remaining student loan and put it into BS2. I never had i

I Got A Promotion!

This has been a long time coming, with the economy being rough and every expense being carefully monitored at work I wasn't sure when they would get around to this. I knew I was up for one several months ago, but I also know how glacially slow money matters move at my company.   It's not much, a 5% raise (above the 3.75% raise I got at review time in July), plus it puts me in the next bracket up in the bonus structure. Before my bonus target was 6.25% and now it's 10%, so really my raise is

Spoiling Myself

Well I finally gave in to what I wanted...and hired a woman to come in and clean my house. It's been a long time coming, but I'm tired of having dust and dirt everywhere and no time (or motivation) to clean it up. I found a local woman who works for herself, I really like that this way I can have good work done and keep the money in the local economy. Considering that the median household income in my town is less than $35K, every penny that stays local is a good thing! (There, how's that ju

Setting Limits To Take Better Care Of Myself

I take on way too much stress at work which leads to insomnia, and then overwork and get sick, and then take a while to recover.   I'm going to try to be more accountable to myself here in terms of setting limits to take better care of myself.   1. Walk 3 miles (1 hour) every morning with my dogs (have been pretty good about this lately except when I'm sick) 2. Eat regularly, not skipping meals (getting better about this) 3. Get to bed early every night (pretty big challenge) 3. Freshly m

Basement Clean Out

We're in the beginning stages of clearing out trash from our basement. Due to living in the house of DH's grandparents we have a ton of stuff that was thought necessary by his grandmother. Over the past 3 weeks we have cleared out 8 large garbage bags full of trash and donated a car full to Goodwill. It feels great! I really hope we can keep up the momentum, it would be great to have full use of the basement again. As it is now we can use the main areas but the storage spaces and bar are pr

Fertility Struggles

So now I'm paying out of pocket for fertility drugs each month, and am planning on moving to the next step. I'm hoping to enroll in my work's health insurance later this fall Then I can really proceed. I also am still planning on an adoption fund however. I have to keep a light at the end of the tunnel. I wish I weren't so afraid of having twins. I really hope I don't need to have any more surgery. It's a relief to know I have my medical fund in place for right now.   I'm looking forwar

1St Work Week Down

Well it's Friday morning, so the first work week is almost down. I've been really trying to stick to Dave's Program this week for the first time in a long time. I'm approaching this from a first things first stand point. I'm trying to find the easy ways to cut back on my spending so far this week I've...   Brought my lunch every day rather than buying it. This is a real accomplishment because normally I buy my lunch everyday. Hopefully this will have the dual effect of dropping some of thi

Warning.... Rant Ahead....

I'm a little frustrated. First I know that we are blessed. We have 6 happy healthy children. One successfully launched into the world. We have a good job. Good enough that I can stay home and homeschool them. We aren't upside down on anything. Not houses, not cars, not CC, nothing. So we ARE blessed. We have also worked darned hard to get here. I was talking to my mom, complaining about something (finance wise) that wasn't working out like I wanted it to, and she said something like

I've Had Enough Of Murphy

I found out our electricity bill this month was higher than usual and couldn't figure out why. Then I noticed a toilet only DH uses was slowly leaking. This was causing our well to run 24 hours a day and causing increased condensation in our basement. We bought some toilet repair stuff at the hardware store but it still leaked. No plumber in the area can come since they're all dealing with bigger emergencies since Irene came to town. So now we just ordered another old part off the internet

The Tale Of Two Numbers

My electric and water bill has two amounts on it. One amount is if you pay by the due date and the other is if you pay after it. Well, having done stupid, I will admit to having to pay the second larger amount more frequently than the other one over the years. Since starting this journey, I have righted that ship and can say since May those bills have been paid on time. And Friday, for the first time in recent memory, I paid a bill almost a full month early. It feels great. I am still gett

Free Museum Day

I love going to the museum, but it can be pretty spendy! That's why I jumped at the offer for 2 free museum passes from the Smithsonian Magazine. Link You get admission on Sept 24 at your choice of museum. Sweet! I'm taking DS12 to the Saint Louis Science Center

First Day Of School!

I hate to admit it, but I was so very calm last night after I got the kids in bed by 8:30pm. This morning 2 of them head off to school, DD#1 will be a junior in high school and DS will be in 3rd grade. All this leaves now is DD#2, who's 3, at home with me. I do have to take her to the 3yr old child screening in a different town, but that's not until 1:30pm.   I can't wait to take pictures of the kids on the front stoop with their backpacks, all ready for their first day! It's a tradition a

Been Down Lately.

I have been a stay at home mom for 10 years now. It is getting hard for me lately and I don't know why, but I miss my freedom and independence that came with receiving a paycheck.   I feel like important decision making has been absent from me somewhere along the line. My husband has the last word on things now, has been for quite some time, and I am starting to resent him for it.   On one hand I want to go back to school, get a good paying job and buy some things I want to, like a car for

Murphy Strikes Again!

As if unexpected vet bills and car bills and healthcare bills (ER visits) and increased gas costs and increased food costs especially due to my husband's freshly made juice fast were not enough, Irene filled up my basement with half a foot of water. Talk about blood, sweat and tears. My DH and I hauled our shop vac filled with 100 lbs of water up the basement step and out to the back and across the yard to dump down a decline on our property I don't know how many times. It was a 6 hour projec

:(

Well, once again the meeting didn't go as planned. DH's brother is still trying to get him to stay on as 1/2 owner of the cottage and his dad said he'd just buy both the boys out and be done with it.   Between the two of them, I can't help but feel they're being manipulative. *sigh* So I told DH just to first offer his 1/2 to is dad for nothing, and if he doesn't take it, tell his dad that he's going to give up his 1/2 to his brother, also for nothing.   It just is not worth having to be

September's A 3 Paycheck Month!

We had a lot to cover this month with car maintenance, home repair, increased gas and food costs and will still have to use some of our income for home repairs but extra paychecks bring us one month closer to month 3 of our FFEF!

Just Threw A $1500 Snowball This Morning

at our Chevy Suburban loan. We are so close to the end of our debt (besides our house, of course) that it makes me want to drain our savings (we have $ put away for taxes as well as our BEF) and get the thing GONE! BUT, I know that'd be stupid.   So, I will wait and be patient.     ETA: It is now later in the afternoon and DH just surpised the CRAP out of me by spontaneously phoning up his brother and letting him know he will accept him buying out his 1/2 of the cottage. His brother see
