I'm new to the DR way of life. I've read his first 2 books cover to cover in 2 days. I'm planning our budget with my dh and trimming the fat wherever I can. There is a FPU class offered at a church just 20min from us. But, the membership kit is $150? WHAT? So, if I'm still trying to build that BEF and pay off debt and still live each month...is it really worth the $150? I'd LOVE to go, but $150...that's hard to swallow. Any advice?

I believe it's definitely worth it.

As for the cost, our church offers the kit for $99 so if there's multiple locations in your area offering FPU you might want to check on the cost. Lampo Group offers coordinators discounts off the retail price.

If there's a Dave Ramsey Live Event coming to your area soon they usually have them discounted there as well.

I don't know of any other investment in yourself that will pay higher dividends than FPU. Its worth many times more than the $150.

That is.......if you actually put the knowledge you learn in FPU to work in your life.

Thanks, that's what I figured. It's an investment...not an expense. So, now to convince dh that it's worth it...even w/ the church discount on the member package. Hey...the church offers free babysitting so I could tell him it's like a date...without the sitter costs!

DH and I used it as a date night (ok, so one night we skipped it and well, didn't go but used my inlaws as if we did! LOL)

Well worth the money. We were working steps 4, 5 & 6 when we went thru and it was still worth it. It opens up a line of communication that makes it well worth the time, money and effort to get there!

For us, it was the difference between sticking with the plan and not.

I actually read TMMO in the fall of 05 and we started the journey, but fell off the wagon after a couple of months.

We started attending a new church in late fall of 06. They were offering the class beginning in February (07). We've been working the plan since then.

It is worth every penny (however, the churches get the kits for $99.50 - I wouldn't go where they charge much more than that. Or at the very least, I'd want to know where the extra money went).

Well, I signed us up! The church did have the kits for $99 and I've been corresponding w/ the coordinator. I'm so excited! Anything that'll keep me on the plan long term b/c I know how I get. Too long living super frugally (we live frugally anyway, but cutting back even more will be difficult) can grate on my nerves. I'll need all the support I can get.

Howdy,
Best thing we ever did. It definitely was a date night because after the class we would do the questions and talk about the concepts.

Boy, coming to terms with our stupid tax on the suburban was a lot of our talk. We had a 0% car loan and money in investments. What to do?

One way to look at this question is like this: Is my education worth it more if I just read the text book, or go to class and actually participate in the discussion?

This is good education to INVEST in!!

We listened to the radio, and read the books.

We did not attend FPU until BS6 - several years after starting. The $100ish price tag was too high for us, then, to swallow.

We have lent out our material several times, and helped others with the FPU kit.

I guess my answer would be that the course helps reluctant spouses, etc. Drives some initial enthusiasm with a small group within your FPU class.

If that facilitates your getting through the baby steps - then do it.
If you are getting enough from radio/books/etc, then it is not really necessary - but good to do at some point in time.
