View Full Version : What to do for Extra Money???

I just wanted to get some of your ideas for making extra money.

I am a SAHM that homeschools so my day is taken up doing that. My husband doesn't want me to get a night job because he is afraid it will take away from my kids education during the day and he is right because I am already not a morning person.

Does anyone know of any legit business that I can do at home here and there. I am already selling some of my old curriculum for BEF on half.com and another site I belong to. I have posted on ebay with starting bids of .99 and minumum postage. I plan to have a garage sale soon as soon as weather permits.

I just want to attack this debt and I feel kind of helpless because I do not feel like I'm contributing to knocking it out and I know we could get it done a lot faster. Even if I only make $50 a month at least I would be doing something. I am doing everything I can cutting corners at the grocery store but I was already really frugal in that area anyway.

I can't babysit because everyone in my neighborhood is retired.

I've thought about working for a catering company or something like that on weekends since hubby is just watching NASCAR anyway. Has anyone ever done something like this? Can you tell me about what I would expect to get paid or how the hours are?

All imput and ideas are appreciated!

Thanks,
Christie

I just got a job at Kohl's doing ad set, I will work 2-3 nights a week $7 per hour from 6-10:30pm. The Hours vary by store though! Also you could look into west at home. www.west.com (i believe that is the address) Good Luck, I felt the same way as you do! I wanted to be able to contribute also!

where did you find the kohl's job? we don't have kohl's here, but something like that would be perfect for me.

There's not much I'd do outside the home right now, with two toddlers and a nursing baby and a varied work schedule for DH. I have found, though, that the better lunch I pack for him, the more he sells. The increase is equivalent to a good, part time job. LOL - Whodathunk? So, Dh thinks that I'm the best wife in the world (as do his co-workers) to pack him such good lunches and I get to save more money.

That's the quickest fix I can think of. It costs a little more money/creativity but the return is VERY high. :)

I'm looking into a paper route, although I'm not a morning person as well.

I just had someone tell me that they make almost $1,000 per month delivering papers, and two routes would bump them to $1,400 per month! You may also have a built in crew with your kiddos...lol.

I have a smallish paper route and make about $400 per month. I may get a second route which would at least double my pay (b/c the min routes are about the size of mine) or more. I also make tips - last pay I made $25 in tips, so it's not like they just come at Christmas. :)

I don't have any job ideas for you, but I wanted to offer this perspective - while you may not feel like you're contributing to the BEF by earning money, you CAN contribute to the BEF through the other part of the equation - which is SAVING money by spending / using less.

Now would be a wonderful time to incorporate home economics into your HS curriculum and do some organization / clearing out / decluttering -- it sounds like you're already working toward that by looking for things to sell online or through a garage sale -- and while you have to wait for the weather to improve, that time will be here before you know it - you want to be ready to go the first good weekend, so that means getting your stuff organized, labeled, priced, etc. NOW.

And going through the pantry to make sure you're good and organized to help you save money at the grocery store. Going through kids' clothing to see what they have outgrown or might need mending or can be passed down from one to another.

The whole equation is Earn More, Spend Less.... so while your DH is out doing the earning, you're doing the spend-less part. Getting your children involved in planning low-cost but healthy and balanced meals, learning how to shop frugally, maintaining an organized home so you don't buy something just to come home and find you already have five ... (ok, I'm talking out loud to myself here - ha ha).... well, you get the point!

when I was pregnant with my son, I worked an extra job nights and weekends (MOSTLY weekends though which would be good for you!) I was a banquet waitress. We worked weddings...mostly on Saturday night which would be good for you too!! made pretty good money too! I worked it as long as I could util I got too big from growing DS (and the SMELLS of the food starting making me gag because I was pregnant. LOL but ewwww!)

LOL! Dh is working today all day at the school, so I brought him a leftover hamburger from last night, with some "munchies" to go with and a drink. He was thrilled, and everyone who saw that I had brought him his lunch thought that was just the greatest thing. It is so cool, because folks think He is something special because *I* treat him special. I like having a special dh!!!

Thanks so much for everyones ideas. I am going to check out the paper route idea and some of the others. I have literaly been giving no sleep to my eyelids with ideas swirling around in my head :saywhat: on what I can do to contribute. I am the nerd so I have all kinds of spreadsheets because that's all I have been able to do to help thus far.

P.S. Can anyone tell me how to get my picture to show up on my posts? I put one in my profile but it doesn't show up when I post.
